PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots snapped a three-game losing streak to crosstown rival Portland State with an 82-75 victory Wednesday night in the River City Rivalry hosted at Viking Pavilion. Isaiah White finished with 21 points and eight assists to lead five Pilots in double figures. Portland improved to 4-1 on the season with the victory, while the Vikings fall to 1-3 overall.
Many different Pilots stepped up at different points in the game. Malcolm Porter and JoJo Walker finished with 13 points apiece, while Jacob Tryon and Takiula Fahrensohn added 12 and 11 points off the bench, respectively.
Freshman point guard Chase Adams managed the hectic pace and full court pressure from the Vikings and finished with nine assists.
The game featured eight ties and three lead changes, but Portland State had control for almost the entirety of the first half.
The Vikings twice had double-digit leads early, but the Pilots finished the first half with a flurry. White hit a step-back three-pointer and then Adams got a steal and layup just before the halftime buzzer to tie the game at 33-33.
Portland opened the second half with a Walker three-pointer and he would make a layup and then hit another three-pointer to put the Pilots ahead 43-35. The Vikings answered with a 16-3 run to regain the lead.
White and Fahrensohn drilled back-to-back three-pointers to take a 56-53 lead that the Pilots would not relinquish.
PSU cut the margin to 64-62, but Tryon came up clutch by drilling all eight of his free throw attempts down the stretch and Fahrensohn hit a dagger three-pointer late as the Pilot lead grew to as much as 13 points in the closing minutes.
Portland shot 53 percent from the field for the game, while limiting the Vikings to 38 percent overall. PSU gained a 42-33 rebounding edge, but the teams were even with 40 points in the paint.
Holland Woods scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Vikings.
Portland returns to the Chiles Center and opens a three-game homestand on Saturday against UC Davis at 1 p.m. A post-game family clinic will be hosted by the Pilots coaching staff and players following the conclusion of the game. Tickets are available by visiting
