PROVO, Utah. --- The Portland Pilots competed in three sets with the #13
th ranked squad in the country, the BYU Cougars. Portland fell with set scores of 15-25, 14-25 and 17-25.
The Pilots (11-16, 3-13 WCC) racked up four service aces, with junior Kellie Hughes & Grace Zilbert each having two. Junior's Liz Reich and Kassidy Naone both had seven kills, while junior Carey Williams led the match with 15 digs.
The match began with the Pilots gaining an early lead on the Cougars (23-4, 14-2 WCC), going up 4-2 thanks to two early kills from Naone. Portland kept it close, going up 10-9 with another kill from Naone. BYU answered with a 13-3 run, taking a commanding 22-12 lead. The Pilots showed late life with a 3-0 run, but couldn't finish the rally, falling the first set at 25-15.
Portland opened the second set with a service ace from Grace, keeping things close initially with No. 15 BYU. With the score tied at 5-5, the Cougars went on a 7-1 run to make it 12-6, forcing an early Pilot timeout. Despite the Pilots acquiring late points once again, BYU took the second set at 25-14.
BYU begun the third set seeking the lead, going up 4-0 quickly. Portland cut into the Cougars lead multiple times, including making it 22-16 thanks to a 4-1 run featuring back to back kills from Reich & Forrest. Despite the late effort, BYU went on to take the third and final set at 25-17.
Next up for the Pilots is a road match against No. 20 San Diego, competing against the Toreros on Nov. 23
rd at noon in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
