LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Portland's Anja Koehler scored her first goal of the season in the second half and the Pilots were knocking on the door all night long at Sullivan Field, but in the end they'd settle for a 1-1 draw with the Loyola Marymount Lions in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game on Wednesday night. The Pilots had 16 corner kicks for the game.
Â
Koehler's goal came after she'd had been denied twice earlier in the match on quality shots. On a counter in the 52nd minute, Kimberly Hazlett whipped in a cross from the right wing towards the top of the sixth. That's where the ball found Koehler, who headed it inside the right post to give the visiting side the 1-nil lead. It's the first goal as a Pilot for Koehler, a grad transfer from Cal.
Â
The game would remain 1-0 in Portland's favor until the Lions were awarded a penalty in the 74th minute after the Pilots were called for a hand ball inside the area. Maki Kono then slotted it in, and the match was level 1-1.
Â
Still tied late in the game, the Pilots earned a corner kick, and they nearly found the winner in the 90th minute. Brianna Miyama sent in the corner, and Taryn Ries put a header on-target. But the LMU keeper, Sadie Kenny, was there for the save, sending the game to overtime.
Â
The first OT began with yet another corner for the Pilots, and again it was a dangerous service from Miyama. This one bounced around the area and took a few deflections before the Pilots pushed an attempt wide.
Â
On their 16th corner of the night, Larkin Russell headed one on-frame in the 100th minute, but Kenny was there for the clutch save, sending the match to a second overtime.
Â
During the second extra time, it was Portland's goalkeeper, Madison Zamora, who came through with the stellar save. From distance, Olivia LaCasto hit a well-struck shot towards the top shelf, but Zamora was there to get a touch on it, sending it over the cross bar.
Â
The clock would soon hit 110 minutes, and the Pilots (6-5-5, 2-3-3 WCC) had their road point. It was the eighth time this season to go to overtime for Portland.
Â
Zamora also provided two early saves to keep the game scoreless as the Lions (4-11-3, 3-4-1 WCC) were pressing during the opening minutes. In the 18th minute, Zamora made a diving stop on a low shot through traffic.
Â
The Pilots then created a handful of opportunities in the attacking third, including in the 25th minute. Koehler gained possession, made a deft move to avoid an LMU player, and hammered a shot towards the upper right corner of the frame. Kenny made a diving save to deny the strike.
Â
Then just before the half, Koehler had a header blocked at the line by a well-positioned defender. The attempt came on a corner, and it appeared destined for the right corner of the net. But it was cleared, and the two teams entered halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
Â
The Pilots now return to Portland to conclude the regular season with a WCC contest against the San Diego Toreros on Saturday night at Merlo Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the Pilots will honor their 11 seniors with a pre-game ceremony.
