PORTLAND, Ore.
--- The Portland Pilots lost in four sets at the Alex G. Spanos Center on Saturday afternoon, losing a tight match throughout against the Pacific Tigers. Portland fell with set scores of 22-25, 22-25, 25-23 and 25-14.
Refusing to go out quietly, the Pilots rebounded in the third set after losing the first two to make 2-1 Tigers. Senior Shayla Hoeft was essential for the Pilots putting a halt to a Pacific sweep, collecting six kills throughout the set.
Hoeft led the squad in kills with 13, while sophomore Claire Forrest wasn't far behind with 11 kills. Hoeft, junior Liz Reich and senior Katie Barker all had four or more total blocks, while junior Carey Williams had 23 digs.
Portland (11-13, WCC 3-10) began the match with an early lead over Pacific (13-13, WCC 5-9) thanks to a 4-1 Pilot run. Portland once again took the lead at 13-12, thanks to another 4-1 run. The Tigers rebounded, going up 22-19, only for Reich to record two straight kills to cut Portland's deficit to 22-21 and forcing a Pacific timeout. The timeout proved to be just what the Tigers needed, going on a 3-1 run to take the first set at 25-22.
The second set began as a close affair, until a 3-0 Tiger run gave them space at 10-6. Portland once again kept it close late, making it a one-point set at 23-22 thanks to Hoeft's seventh kill of the day. Pacific kept their composure, taking the next two points and subsequently the set at 25-22.
Down 0-2 in set scores, the Pilots needed to bounce back quickly to stay in the match. Despite constant pressure from the Tigers, Portland held the lead for almost the entirety of the third set. Hoeft's six kills throughout the set was vital for the Pilots to retain their lead. Pacific would cut Portland's lead to one at 24-23, but a service error across the net gave the Pilots the third set at 25-23.
Pacific came out in the fourth set seeking to put an end to the Pilots new found momentum, opening the set on a 9-3 run. The Tigers remained in front the rest of the way, closing out the match with a set score of 25-14.
