PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Kate Andersen, who led the Pilots with 19 points, hit a clutch, game-tying lay-up in the closing seconds to send the game with Loyola Chicago to overtime, but the Ramblers prevailed 78-64 to claim the win on Sunday afternoon at the Chiles Center.
Â
The Pilots (5-3) led for most of the game, including when they were ahead 49-37 after Maddie Muhlheim drilled a three-pointer with 7:14 remaining. From there, the Ramblers (6-0) embarked on a 17-2 run to surge in front by three. Muhlheim then hit another one from beyond the arc to level the score with just under a minute left to play, but Loyola's Allison Day came through at the other end with a go-ahead lay-in.
Â
Down to their last possession and trailing by two, the Pilots turned to Andersen, the lone senior on the roster. Andersen then provided an off-balanced, acrobatic lay-in which tied the score. She was also fouled in the process, sending her to the line with a chance to win it, but the attempt was off the mark as the game remained 56-56 with about a second left.
Â
The Ramblers did get a shot off before the buzzer on their ensuing possession, but it was long and the two teams would head to overtime.
Â
The extra period was all Loyola, who scored the first ten points of overtime, and they'd hold on from there to register the road win.
Â
Andersen was eight of 13 from the field, and she added five rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Alex Fowler chipped in with 18 points, and Muhlheim finished with 10. Fowler just missed her third double-double of the season, corralling a team-high nine rebounds.
Â
Ellen Rice, who hit 11 free throws, led the Ramblers with 17 points, and she recorded a double-double with 12 boards.
Â
Loyola opened the game 0-12 from the field, allowing the Pilots to jump out to an early lead, with the help of a corner three-pointer by Andersen. The Ramblers did hang around, and were within three points after the first quarter.
Â
Andersen began the second period with a lay-up to push the Pilots' lead to five, but Loyola soon tied the score at 13-13. Moments later Andersen hit another three to allow Portland to claim a five-point cushion, and the Pilots still led by four when Fowler connected from down low.
Â
Andersen had 12 points at the break with the Pilots on top 26-23.
Â
Portland opened its biggest lead of the day to that point early in the third period as Fowler collected a pair of field goals, and Andersen added a lay-up to make it a 34-25 game. The Pilots' advantage remained nine as Fowler and Andersen continued to knock down shots, and Muhlheim's corner three with about a minute left in the frame made the score 43-31.
Â
Loyola did hit the first two field goals of the final period to cut into the deficit. Keeley Frawley ended the Rambler surge with a lay-up while getting fouled, and Muhlheim followed with that three-pointer from the top of the key to give the Pilots a 12-point edge with about seven minutes remaining. That's when Loyola went on their lengthy run to take the lead and set up the dramatic final minutes.
Â
The Pilots stay at home next weekend to host Grand Canyon on Sunday, with tip-off at the Chiles Center set for 2 p.m.
