PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Alex Fowler just missed a double-double with 23 points and nine rebounds and Kate Andersen added 17 points as the Pilots pulled away from the Grand Canyon Lopes to win 73-41 on Sunday afternoon at the Chiles Center. It's the third game this season to score at least 20 points for Fowler, a freshman forward out of Townsville, Australia.
Â
Fowler was dominant down low, hitting 10 of 16 from the field, while also matching a career-high with three blocked shots. Fowler entered the game as the number two scorer in the West Coast Conference, and she ranks fifth in the league in rebounding.
Â
Andersen continues her solid recent play, finishing with five rebounds and five assists to go along with her 17 points. As a team, the Pilots (6-3) collected 23 overall assists on their 29 field goals.
Â
It was the Lopes (2-5) who jumped out to an early lead, claiming a 9-6 edge after the first four minutes of the game. From there it was all Pilots as they responded with a 17-2 run to give them the double-digit advantage after the first quarter. Shasta Parker sparked the surge with a three-pointer, and Fowler and Maddie Muhlheim also connected from deep to make it a 23-11 game.
Â
The run would continue in the second period, and a three from Kelsey Lenzie gave the Pilots a 20-point lead, their biggest to that point, with 5:32 left in the half. Fowler also continued to do work down low, recording 15 first-half points to help the Pilots take a 45-22 edge into the break.
Â
It was more of the same in the second half as the Pilots stretched their lead to 34 points. Portland also held the Lopes to just eight points in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Â
Parker recorded a career-best seven points, while Lauren Walker dished a career-high five assists. Keeley Frawley matched a career-high with eight boards.
Â
The Pilots, who shot better than 50 percent for most of the game, finished with a 47.5 shooting percentage, and they out-rebounded Grand Canyon 42-29. The Lopes shot just 29 percent from the floor and were led by Da'jah Daniel with 18 points. Daniel also had 11 rebounds to register the double-double.
Â
Next Sunday the Portland State Vikings visit The Bluff for a 2 p.m. game with the Pilots at the Chiles Center.
