PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Haylee Andrews and Alex Fowler both finished with 20 points and the Pilots built a double-digit lead over Portland State, but the Vikings rallied in the second half to claim a 77-71 win on Sunday afternoon at the Chiles Center.
The first half belonged to the Pilots (6-4), who jumped out to an early 7-2 lead after Maddie Muhlheim buried a corner three during the opening minutes. The Vikings (6-3) did momentarily surge ahead, but Kate Andersen connected from deep, and Muhlheim made a steal at one end and a lay-up at the other to give Portland a 21-19 edge.
The Pilots stretched their lead to 27-19 in the second quarter following another three by Muhlheim and a bucket down low from Fowler. The advantage was soon 10 points when Fowler provided an offensive board and put-back. Moments later Andrews found Lauren Walker for a lay-in with a nice feed, and the score was soon 37-23 when Andrews connected on a runner.
The lead was still 14 a few minutes later when Keeley Frawley drained a three, and Kelsey Lenzie added one from beyond three-point arc just before the end of the half to push the Portland advantage to 48-33 at the break.
The Vikings made a run to begin the third quarter to cut into the deficit, and they'd soon pull within three points. Andrews and Fowler answered with a pair of hoops in the paint to help the Pilots maintain their edge and take a 60-53 lead to the final frame.
Portland State continued their surge in the fourth, and with 7:35 remaining Tatiana Streun gave the Vikings their first lead since early in the game with a lay-up. The Pilots responded with a put-back by Frawley, which at the time tied the game at 65-65 with 5:53 left to play.
The Viks again re-claimed the lead after that, and again the Pilots refused to falter as Fowler found Andrews for a baseline lay-in that made the score 69-68 in PSU's favor and 2:06 showing on the clock.
From there the Vikings were able to create some separation with timely field goals and effective defense. The Pilots fell behind by six before a Frawley three briefly made it a three-point game with 25 seconds remaining, but Portland State would hold on for the road win.
It was the first game back for Andrews, who missed five straight following an injury. The senior point guard added five rebounds and five assists to go along with her 20 points. Fowler, a freshman, reaches the 20-point plateau for the fourth time this year, while Frawley, also a freshman, collected a career-high 10 rebounds to lead the Pilots.
Streun led five Vikings to score in double digits with 17 points, and she finished with 12 boards to register a double-double.
The Pilots have one more non-conference game remaining, which is against Willamette on Thursday. Tip-off for the Pilots and Bearcats is 5 p.m., and the game is part of a Portland basketball double header as the men will follow with a game vs. Jackson State.
