PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Haylee Andrews finished with 18 points and seven assists, Kate Andersen added 15 points, and the Pilots jumped out to a big lead early and never looked back en route to an 82-42 win over the Willamette Bearcats in a non-conference women's basketball game played on Thursday at the Chiles Center. The Pilots shot 56 percent from the field to claim the home win.
Â
Andersen was active early at both ends of the court as she scored 10 points in the first quarter to help the Pilots (7-4) surge ahead. Maddie Muhlheim gave Portland their first double-digit lead of the night when she buried a three-pointer, and Keeley Frawley made it a 30-10 game late in the opening frame with a jumper.
Â
The lead would swell from there as the Pilots continued to knock down shots. Portland took a 52-22 lead at the break, and they relied mostly on their bench players in the second half.
Â
Andrews missed just two shots overall, going 9-for-11 from the floor, and Alex Fowler was a perfect 5-for-5 to finish with 11 points in just 14 minutes. Andrews also had five steals to lead the defensive effort.
Â
Andersen was seven of 10, and Muhlheim connected on a pair from behind the arc and collected 10 points. 58 of Portland's 82 points came in the paint.
Â
Ava Kitchin led the Bearcats with 10 points off the bench.
Â
The Pilots next turn their attention to the West Coast Conference when they open league play against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Sunday, Dec. 29, in Spokane, Wash. Tip-off for the conference opener is set for 1 p.m.
