PORTLAND, Ore. – Tristan Jarrett scored 31 points to lead the Jackson State Tigers to a 73-63 win over Portland Thursday night at the Chiles Center.
The Pilots (8-4) committed 22 turnovers and forced just 12 as the Tigers (3-8) gained a 23-10 edge in points off of turnovers.
Freshman point guard Chase Adams recorded season-highs of 15 points and six rebounds while playing all 40 minutes for the shorthanded Pilots. Portland was without starting guard Malcolm Porter and reserve point guard Quincy Ferebee due to injury.
Sophomore Takiula Fahrensohn tallied his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, but no other Pilot reached double figures.
Jackson State led for a majority of the game after Jarrett sparked an early 13-0 run to give the Tigers a 26-16 lead. Jacob Tryon converted a three-point play to pull Portland within two late in the half, but Jarrett buried a three-pointer to give JSU a 37-32 halftime lead.
The margin grew to as much as 16 points as Jayveous McKinnis had a dunk in the paint to make it 51-35 early in the second half.
Portland chipped the deficit down to 67-60 on a Fahrensohn three-pointer with 1:53 remaining, but that would be as close as the Pilots would get down the stretch.
The Pilots shot just 39 percent from the field and Jackson State finished at 48 percent overall.
Portland will next travel to Hawaii to participate in the 2019 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Dec. 22-25 at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Pilots will open on Sunday, Dec. 22 against Houston at noon (PST) on ESPNU. Depending on results, Portland will face either Georgia Tech or Boise State on Monday and then conclude the tournament on Christmas Day. Visit
