HONOLULU, Hawaii – Freshman point guard Chase Adams scored a season-high 19 points, but the Portland Pilots dropped an 85-69 decision to Boise State Monday to open the second day of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Pilots (8-6) will conclude the tournament in the seventh-place game against either UTEP or Ball State on Christmas day at either 10:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. (PST) on ESPNU.
Derrick Alston scored a season-high 32 points on 10-of-18 shooting and dished out six assists, while Justinian Jessup added 17 points to lead the Broncos (7-5).
Malcolm Porter and Takiula Fahrensohn scored 12 points each for Portland.
The Broncos rushed to a 10-point lead out of the gates behind 13 early points from Jessup. Portland answered with a run to tie the score, but Boise State closed the half with a 14-5 spurt and a 43-34 halftime lead.
Porter's three-pointer pulled the Pilots within six early in the second half, but then Alston took over. He buried back-to-back deep threes and scored eight straight points as the Broncos moved ahead 63-47. Boise State would lead by as much as 19 points late as Alston had 28 points midway through the second half.
Portland struggled once again on the glass as the Broncos gained a 38-25 rebounding margin, including 10 offensive rebounds to just four for the Pilots. BSU outscored Portland 9-3 in second chance points, 14-7 in points off turnovers and 34-22 in the paint.
The Pilot offense was effective, shooting 46 percent from the field, but the Broncos finished at 49 percent overall and made 20-of-26 free throws compared to just 11-of-16 for Portland.
