Box Score KENT, Wash. – Portland made just 16-of-28 free throws and struggled to make shots late as the Seattle U Redhawks held on for a 73-71 victory Saturday night at the ShoWare Center. Isaiah White had a shot to tie at the buzzer just miss off the back rim as the Redhawks escaped despite their own late shooting issues.
White led the Pilots (6-3) with 18 points and five assists, while Jacob Tryon just missed his second double-double of the season with 10 points and nine rebounds. Tahirou Diabate also finished in double figures with 10 points.
Portland trailed most of the game until a 6-0 run tied the game at 56-56. Despite the rally, the Pilots missed four free throws during the spurt.
Tryon hit a fall-away jumper to give Portland its first lead since early, he added a rebound and putback to make it 60-59.
Seattle U answered with an 8-1 run to re-take the lead. Tryon made 1-of-2 free throws before Means hit a corner jumper for a 70-65 lead and 1:22 to go. Portland missed a pair of three-pointers and Means made 1-of-2 at the line for a 71-65 lead and 28 seconds left.
White made a driving dunk and Ferebee drilled a three-pointer to pull Portland within 72-70 with 14 seconds left. Two more missed free throws by the Redhawks (6-5) led to White getting the rebound and being fouled.
He went to the free throw line with a chance to tie. He made the first and missed the second. Portland immediately fouled Myles Carter who also split a pair at the line setting up the final possession. JoJo Walker got to the rim, but his layup attempt was blocked out of bounds by Carter. White had a good look at a fade-away 18-footer in the right corner, but it was just long.
For the second straight game Portland's defense did enough to earn a win as Seattle was held to 39 percent shooting overall. CSUN shot just 36 percent from the floor in a 71-64 win at UP on Wednesday. Portland shot 47 percent from the field on Saturday night.
Rebounding continued to be an issue for the Pilots as the Redhawks garnered a 42-32 rebounding margin and 11-4 edge in second chance points.
Seattle U led 37-31 at the half as the Pilots committed nine turnovers before intermission.
Terrell Brown led all scorers with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Redhawks.
Portland will return to the Chiles Center to open a three-game homestand on Friday at 7 p.m. against Evergreen State. The Pilots will also host Florida A&M (Dec. 16) and Jackson State (Dec. 19) before closing out the non-conference season at the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii (Dec. 22-25).
