MALIBU, Calif. – Josh McSwiggan buried six three-pointers and scored 20 points for Portland, but Pepperdine erupted in the second half for an 86-80 victory Saturday in West Coast Conference men's basketball action at Firestone Fieldhouse.
The Waves (13-16, 6-9) scored 51 second half points to overcome a 38-35 halftime deficit to pull out the win. Sophomore guard Colbey Ross led five Pepperdine players in double figures with 23 points and 10 assists.
McSwiggan hit his first six three-pointers and finished 7-for-9 from the field, 6-of-7 from three-point range. The 20 points was his second highest scoring output against a Division I opponent this season.
Sophomore guard Marcus Shaver Jr. added 17 points, while sophomore guard JoJo Walker finished with 10 points for the Pilots (7-22, 0-14 WCC).
Portland has lost 15 straight, while the Waves snapped a three-game losing streak with the win.
Pepperdine shot 52 percent in the second half, made 6-of-10 threes and converted 21-of-24 free throws after intermission to secure the win.
McSwiggan was on fire early. He beat the shot clock buzzer while falling out of bounds three-pointer in the corner for his first basket and would go on to make four straight in the first half. He finished a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 14 points as Portland carried a 38-35 lead into halftime.
Shaver Jr. opened the second half with a layup to give the Pilots a five-point edge, but Pepperdine answered with an 11-1 run to regain the lead. Walker's three-pointer with 11:28 remaining made it a 56-53 Pilot lead, but the Waves scored the next nine points at the free throw line to take the lead for good.
Overall, the Pilots shot 53 percent from the field, the second highest percentage of the season against D-I competition. Portland also drilled 11-of-23 three-pointers and 19-of-23 free throws, but Pepperdine made up the margin with a 30-22 rebounding edge and by making 29-of-35 free throws. Ross was 14-of-16 by himself at the charity stripe.
Portland will close the regular season with two games next week. The Pilots visit Saint Mary's on Thursday at 8 p.m. and then will host Santa Clara on Saturday for Senior Night. That game will be the second of a doubleheader with the Pilot women hosting Pepperdine at 4:30 p.m. followed by the men at 7 p.m.
Crisshawn Clark, Xavier Hallinan, Xavier Hallinan and Franklin Porter will be honored prior to the men's game as part of senior day. All four will graduate in May. Tickets are available by visiting
