PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Logan Orndorf from the men's track and field team and Darian Slaga of women's basketball have been named the University of Portland's U.S. Bank Student-Athletes of the Month for January.
At the UW Indoor Preview in early January, Orndorf became the first Pilot in UP history to run a sub-four-minute mile (3:59.94). The redshirt-senior from Duvall, Wash., also produced another incredible performance a few weeks later at the UW Invite to move up to second all-time in the indoor 3000m, finishing sixth in his heat with a time of 7:52.33.
Slaga, a senior guard out of Prescott Valley, Ariz., averaged 19.1 points per contest during the month, which included four games with 20 points or more. She also averaged 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game, and she hit a career-high six three-pointers against Pacific on Jan. 3. She shot 45 percent overall from the field, which included a 10-for-15 performance against San Francisco to help lead the Pilots to a comeback win over the Dons. She closed the month with back-to-back 25-point games against USF and at Saint Mary's.
