PORTLAND, Ore. -- University of Portland Vice President of Athletics Scott Leykam was appointed to the Sport Oregon Executive Board of Directors. Leykam will serve on the board from 2025-27
"It is an honor to be appointed to the Sport Oregon Executive Board of Directors," Leykam said. "I have enjoyed my 13 years on the Sport Oregon Board and am excited to serve in an executive role with many of the top sports minds and corporate supporters in our state. I am grateful to the Sport Oregon staff for providing the University of Portland a spot on the Executive Board for the first time. From an institutional perspective, we look forward to our continuing work with Sport Oregon on hosting the 2028 NCAA Women's Basketball Regional and the 2030 Women's Basketball Final Four at the Moda Center."
The 24-person board features various important figures in Oregon sports, connected in a mission to drive economic growth in the state of Oregon through sport. Sport Oregon has over 140 board members between its Executive Board and Investor Board and an additional Young Professionals Board that features more than 70 of the top young sport professionals in the area.
"The board is critical to our success as an organization, and we are very excited to welcome this year's officer slate and executive board to lead the way as we continue delivering community impact for our state," said Jim Etzel, CEO of Sport Oregon via press release. "We are proud to have such a quality, diverse group of engaged local leaders committed to helping us advance our mission and achieve our goals. Together, we will continue to grow Sport Oregon as a truly statewide organization of influence and impact, build a sustainable model for our Foundation, and champion the facility infrastructure needed to keep Oregon competitive. With this leadership in place, we look forward to delivering positive outcomes and winning more opportunities for our state."
Leykam has played a crucial role in college sports during his tenure as the head of Pilot Athletics. Most recently, Leykam was one of 10 administrators appointed to the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee, the committee responsible for organizing and executing the NCAA Tournament each season while also addressing policies and procedures for competition. He serves a four-year term that began in September 2024.
Prior to that, Leykam worked on the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Committee, including one year as chair in the 2022-23 academic year. He was chair of the West Coast Conference Basketball Cabinet for six years and spent a four-year term with the NCAA Championships & Sports Management Cabinet.
Pilot Athletics have thrived with Leykam at the helm over the last 13 years, with Leykam being named a 2022-23 NACDA Cushman & Wakefield Athletics Director of the Year. The Pilots have also seen numerous improvements to current facilities as well as the opening of new ones. The University opened a brand new on-campus boat house – one of just two on-campus boathouses on the West Coast – last year as well as the Tom and Meg Names Family Foundation Beach Volleyball Courts earlier this year, both down on the Franz Campus by the Willamette River. The University of Portland also recently received a $5 million gift from the Chiles Foundation to be used for renovations to the Chiles Center, the home of Pilot Basketball and Volleyball, and a $1 million gift for student-athlete leadership and facility construction for UP Athletics.
