PORTLAND, Ore. – James Batemon scored 19 of his 28 points in the second half to lead the Loyola Marymount Lions to a 72-55 victory over the Portland Pilots Saturday night in a West Coast Conference men's basketball game at the Chiles Center.
The game was tied at the half, but LMU used a 27-4 run midway through the second half to put the game away. The Pilots (7-16, 0-11 WCC) losing streak extends to 12 games, while the Lions (17-8, 5-6) complete the season sweep of Portland with the victory.
Marcus Shaver Jr. led Portland with 19 points, while JoJo Walker added 15 points and Tahirou Diabate finished with 12.
Eli Scott scored three consecutive layups to start the decisive run. It turned a three-point deficit to a 20-point lead as Batemon was the catalyst with 13 points during the rally.
The Pilots stopped the bleeding with a three-point play by Diabate. Walker then converted a four-point play and Jacob Tryon buried a three to make it a 55-43 deficit, but Batemon again answered with a baseline jumper.
Portland cut the margin to nine a couple times late, but would get no closer.
LMU garnered a 20-0 margin in points off of turnovers in the game. The Lions forced 18 Pilot turnovers and committed just 10.
LMU shot 47 percent from the field, including 56 percent in the second half. Portland finished at 39 percent overall and just 5-of-20 from three-point range. Shaver Jr. was 5-for-10 from the floor, Walker finished 4-of-10 and Diabate 4-of-5, but no other Pilot made more than one field goal in the game.
It was a low-scoring affair early as the first half featured four ties and four lead changes as the teams entered the half tied at 24. Shaver Jr. scored 12 of Portland's first-half points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Portland will have a week off between games before returning to the Chiles Center to host the San Francisco Dons on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. Tickets for all remaining home games are available at
