PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Chris Clements tossed a complete-game shutout and the Pilots finished off the sweep of Northern Colorado with a 4-0 win over the Bears on Sunday afternoon at a sun-splashed Joe Etzel Field. Clements struck out 13 to claim his second consecutive complete-game win.
Â
Portland extends its winning streak to six straight games, which is the longest stretch without a loss since 2012. The Pilots' 13-4 record is the best start to a season since that same year, when Portland also won 13 of their first 17 games.
Â
Clements scattered just six hits to improve to 4-0 on the year. He walked only one, struck out the side in the top of the third inning, and allowed only two UNC (2-11) runners to reach third base. The 13 K's are the most for a Portland pitcher since Kevin Baker also fanned 13 in 2017.
Â
All four Portland runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning. After the frame began with a strike out, Daniel Lopez and Cody Hawken both reached base with a walk and a hit-by-pitch, respectively. Hunter Montgomery then came through with an RBI single to left field, which scored Lopez with the game's first run.
Â
Another hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, and Tracye Tammaro brought all three runners home with a two-out double into the right-center gap. The 4-0 lead was more than enough for Clements, a senior righty who also went the distance during a win over Stephen F. Austin last weekend to earn WCC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Â
Northern Colorado used five pitchers on the afternoon with the loss going to reliever Carter Chacon (1-1). He went 1.1 innings and was charged with two runs, and reliever Bill Moreland allowed the other two runs in the fourth.
Â
Portland defeated the Bears on Friday night and took both ends of a double header on Saturday en route to the four-game sweep. It's the first four-game series sweep for the Pilots since taking four from Eastern Oregon in 1982, and it's the first against a DI opponent since winning four against Seattle in 1980.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a visit from Seattle U on Wednesday. First pitch at Joe Etzel Field is set for 3 p.m.
