USAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- Portland's Matt Kelly hit his fifth home run of the season and had seven RBI's, Tracye Tammaro and Daniel Lopez also homered, and the Pilots rolled to a 20-2 win over the San Francisco Dons in a West Coast Conference baseball game played at Benedetti Diamond on Saturday afternoon. The seven RBI's are the most by a Pilot since Kory Casto also drove in seven runs during a game in 2003.
The 20 runs are the most scored by the Pilots since 2006 when they won 20-13 at Oregon State, and it's Portland's largest margin of victory since blanking UC Davis 19-0 that same season. It's also the most runs for Portland against a WCC opponent since a 22-11 win at Santa Clara in 2002.
The Pilots (15-5, 1-1 WCC) took control early with two runs in the top of the first and three more in the second before exploding for an eight-run third inning. Kelly's home run came in the top of the second with two outs and two on. He drove a ball over the fence in left-center field to hand the Pilots a 5-0 lead.
That lead would grow in the third when the Pilots sent 11 batters to the plate. Tammaro and Blake Porter both brought in a run, and Chad Stevens sent an RBI double into left field. Kelly then produced two more RBI's with a base hit, and Lopez followed with a two-run homer to left. It's the fourth home run this season for Lopez.
Tammaro homered for the third straight game when he left the yard with a solo shot in the fourth, making it a 13-0 game.
The Pilots added six more runs in the eighth inning, with three of those coming on walks with the bases loaded. Kelly added a two-run single during the frame, and Lopez notched his third RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Kelly and Stevens each had three of Portland's 12 hits. Stevens also scored four runs, and Tammaro finished with three RBI's
Portland starting pitcher Nate Packard (2-0) earns his second win of the year after tossing 6.0 innings. He surrendered the two runs on seven hits, and he struck out seven. Reliever Cameron Richman worked the final three innings to collect the save. Richman allowed just one base runner to reach, while fanning three.
The Dons (11-7, 1-1 WCC) used seven pitchers on the day, with the loss going to starter Scott Parker (1-2), who lasted just 2.1 innings.
The Dons won the opener of the three-game series 2-1 on Friday, setting up the rubber match on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
