PORTLAND, Ore. – Santa Clara sophomore guard Tahj Eaddy made eight three-pointers and scored 26 points as the Broncos beat Portland 78-62 Saturday night before 3,007 fans in the regular season finale at the Chiles Center.
Eaddy's performance spoiled Senior Night, as Portland recognized four players set to graduate in May prior to tip-off. He finished 8-for-12 from three-point range and added four assists. Freshman guard Trey Wertz added 19 points and nine assists for the Broncos (16-14, 8-8 WCC).
Santa Clara secured the No. 6 seed for the WCC Basketball Championships with the win, while the Pilots (7-24, 0-16) lost their 17th consecutive game and will enter the tournament as the No. 10 seed and face No. 7 seed San Diego in the first round on Thursday at 8 p.m.
Sophomore guard Marcus Shaver Jr. paced the Pilots with 16 points, while sophomore forward Jacob Tryon added 10 points off the bench.
Despite the final score the game was close until the closing minutes. Shaver sparked a 13-5 run with seven straight points and Pilot sophomore guard JoJo Walker gave Portland its first lead since early in the contest with a deep three-pointer to make it 49-48.
Santa Clara answered with a layup from Josip Vrankic and consecutive threes from Keyshawn Justice to regain a seven point lead.
Eaddy buried two more threes to give the Broncos separation and a 66-54 lead with 4:05 left and the Pilots were unable to get it back to single digits the rest of the way.
The Broncos led by as much as 10 points early in the first half and carried a 32-28 lead into the break. Eaddy drilled four first-half three-pointers to lead the way.
Santa Clara shot 48 percent from the field, made 11-of-22 three-pointers and 11-of-12 free throws on the night. The Pilots finished at 42 percent overall, 9-for-25 from three-point range and just 7-of-17 at the charity stripe.
Portland recognized Crisshawn Clark, Xavier Hallinan, Josh McSwiggan, Franklin Porter and team manager Dane Swanson pre-game as each will graduate this May. All four players started and Clark finished with a season-high eight points and Hallinan hit a pair of three-pointers in six minutes. McSwiggan had a team-high five rebounds, while Porter filled the stat sheet with seven points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals.
The
WCC Championships will once again be held at the Orleans Arena and Las Vegas. First round winner advance to the second round on Friday. The quarterfinals are set for Saturday, while the semifinals and championship games are Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Official seeds will be announced on Sunday afternoon.
