PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland seniors Julie Spencer and Darian Slaga celebrated Senior Day with 20 points each as the Pilots cruised past the Pepperdine Waves, winning 85-63 in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played on Saturday at the Chiles Center. Fellow senior Lisa Kaempf scored seven points, and all three were honored with a pre-game ceremony.
Â
Spencer added a season-high 15 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the year. She connected on four three-pointers, while Slaga knocked down a pair from beyond the arc.
Â
Haylee Andrews and Maddie Muhlheim were both clutch in the second half to help the Pilots (13-16, 5-13 WCC) pull away from the Waves (19-10, 12-6 WCC). Andrews finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while Muhlheim shot 4-for-5 overall and was a perfect 2-for-2 from deep to register 12 points.Â
The Pilots were solid on defense in the first quarter, holding the Waves to just seven points during the opening frame. The Waves went scoreless for more than more minutes during one stretch, as Slaga hit a tough lay-up, Spencer connected on a baseline jumper, and Kate Andersen hit a turn-around shot in the lane to give the Pilots a 13-7 lead.Â
In the second, Spencer buried a three from the top of the key on a nice pass from Kaempf, and Slaga followed with consecutive three-pointers as the Pilots pushed their lead to double digits. The Waves had an answer, and a 12-2 run late in the frame pulled them within 30-26 at the break.Â
The Waves tried to stay within reach in the third quarter, but Andrews knocked down a three-pointer, and Andersen hit a jumper and a three moments later to stretch their lead to 12 points. Andrews then went coast-to-coast for a lay-in, and Spencer added one down low late as Portland led 55-45 going to the fourth.
The Waves scored five quick points to begin the final period, but Muhlheim soon caught fire, hitting consecutive three-pointers, with the second coming from way downtown. Spencer also drilled a three, and Muhlheim collected a steal and a lay-in to spark a 14-0 run and build Portland's lead to 77-53. Time would soon run out on Pepperdine as the Pilots claimed the win on senior day.
Â
The Pilots dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Waves 58-46. Pepperdine was also held to just 31 percent shooting. Barbara Sitanggan led the Waves with 17 points.Â
Â
The Pilots next head to the West Coast Conference Championships, which are set for next week at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. As the No. 8 seed, the Pilots will open the tourney on Thursday against San Francisco, with tip-off set for 12 p.m.
