PORTLAND, Ore. --- Hunter Montgomery and Daniel Lopez both homered for the Pilots, but the Loyola Marymount Lions jumped out to an early lead before claiming a 10-3 win over Portland on Saturday night at Joe Etzel Field. The two teams will next conclude the three-game West Coast Conference series on Sunday.
The Lions (17-9, 7-1 WCC) scored two runs in the top of the first inning, added another in the second, and took a 3-0 lead in the third. The two runs in the first came on a two-runner homer by Trevin Esquerra. Nick Sogard earned an RBI in the second when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Alex Lambeau collected an RBI in the third when his bunt scored Brandon Shearer.
LMU added two more runs in the top of the fifth before Montgomery got the Pilots on the board with his fifth homer of the season in the home half of the frame. His blast to deep left field easily cleared the fence to make it a 6-1 game.
The Lions recorded a few more insurance runs before Lopez left the yard with Chad Stevens on third base in the bottom of the eighth. The two-run blast is Lopez's fifth home run this year.
The win goes to LMU starter Josh Agnew (3-1), who limited the Pilots to just three hits, including Montgomery's home run, in 5.1 innings. Four relievers followed Agnew, and Alexander Burge gave up the long fly to Lopez.
Portland (16-11, 1-7) starter Cameron Richman (0-1) is charged with the loss, and Nate Packard and Morgan White came out of the bullpen for the Pilots.Â
First pitch for the finale is set for 12 p.m. tomorrow at Joe Etzel Field.
