SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland sophomore guard Marcus Shaver Jr. earned honorable mention All-West Coast Conference honors, the league announced on Tuesday. It marks the second straight year that WCC coaches have recognized Shaver Jr. for his on-court performance.
Shaver Jr. is the first Pilot to earn All-WCC honors as a freshman and sophomore on The Bluff since the league began recognizing honorable mentions in 1997.
The Phoenix, Ariz. native ranked 11th in scoring during league play (15.3) and reached double figures in all but three WCC games this year. He established new career-highs twice during the stretch, both against Pacific. He recorded 25 points on 9-for-12 shooting on Jan. 12 in Portland, and then erupted for 30 points on 9-of-14 shooting in Stockton, Calif. on Jan. 26.
His 1.8 threes made per game are eighth in the league. He also ranked 11th in three-point percentage (.403) and 13th in free throw percentage (.775). Earlier this year he was named to the Rainbow Classic All-Tournament Team in Hawai'i.
Shaver became the first Pilot since Taishi Ito in 2007 to be named to the WCC All-Freshman Team last year and was the first UP freshman to earn All-WCC honorable mention honors since Donald Wilson in 2003.
No. 1-ranked Gonzaga swept the individual awards as Rui Hachimura was named the WCC Player of the Year. Brandon Clarke took home the newcomer and defensive player of the year honors, while Mark Few was named coach of the year.
Portland will open the 2019 WCC Basketball Championships on Thursday night at 8 p.m. against No. 7-seeded San Diego at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The winner will move on to face the No. 6 seed, Santa Clara, on Friday at 8 p.m. For complete brackets, schedules, game coverage and other information, visit
