PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Chad Stevens hit a pair of home runs and starter Eli Morse registered 11 strike outs as the Pilots opened their four-game series against the Northern Colorado Bears with a convincing 17-2 win on Friday at Joe Etzel Field. The Pilots out-hit the Bears 13-4, and Matt Kelly and Blake Porter also homered for Portland.
Â
Stevens' first home run came on the first pitch he saw leading off the bottom of the first inning. Portland added another run in the third inning before breaking it open with three runs in the fourth, six in the fifth, and four more in the seventh as the Pilots scored at least one run in every inning except one.
Â
Stevens went 3-for-5 on the day with four RBI's and four runs scored, and he left the yard for the second time during the three-run fourth inning. Porter led off that inning with his first career home run as he sent a deep fly over the fence in center field.
Â
Morse (2-0), Portland's sophomore right-hander, had more than enough run support as he worked 6.0 innings. He yielded the four hits, and both runs scored were unearned. Freshman reliever Jacob Biesterfeld tossed the final 3.0 innings, holding the Bears (2-8) without a hit or a run to notch his first career save. He K'd two.
Â
Tracye Tammaro also finished with three hits for the Pilots, claiming a triple and a double and scoring twice, and Gabe Skoro had another solid day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI's and three runs scored.
Â
Kelly's homer, a three-run shot, happened in the fifth inning when he welcomed the new pitcher by hammering a ball over the left-field fence. Skoro and Hunter Montgomery also produced RBI's in the fifth.
Â
UNC used five pitchers, who combined to issue 15 walks overall. The starter Isaac Bracken (1-2) pitched 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks.
Â
At 10-4, the Pilots are off to their best start to a season since 2012.
Â
The Pilots and Bears continue their series tomorrow with a double header, which is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. The starting time for Sunday's finale has been moved up an hour to 11 a.m.
