PORTLAND, Ore. / BELLEVUE, Wash. --- In a game that took almost a week to finish and was held in two separate locations, the Portland Pilots rallied for a 16-14 win over the Seattle U Redhawks on Tuesday afternoon at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue. The game started last Wednesday at Joe Etzel Field in Portland, but it was halted in the bottom of the fifth inning because of rain.
Â
The Pilots (18-11) began Tuesday trailing 13-12 when the game resumed, and the Redhawks (6-20) added a run in the top of the seventh to extend their lead. But the Pilots answered with a four-run home half of the frame, which started with an RBI double down the line by Matt Kelly.
Â
Hawken followed with a two-run triple into the fight-center gap, and Nick Merone capped the scoring with an RBI single. It was the first career hit for Merone, and it gave the Pilots a two-run edge.
Â
Connor Knutson then notched his eighth save of the year by pitching a scoreless top of the ninth.
Â
Hawken finished the game with five RBI's, while Kelly, Merone, Daniel Lopez, and Chad Stevens each drove in two runs.
Â
Last Wednesday at Joe Etzel field in Portland, the Redhawks jumped out to a sizeable 9-0 lead. The Pilots cut into the deficit with a three-run fourth inning, Seattle U answered with four runs in the top of the fifth, and Portland made it a one-run game with nine runs in the bottom of the frame before the game was suspended by rain.
Â
Both Hawken and Stevens provided RBI singles in the fourth, and four SU pitches combined to surrender Portland's nine runs in the fifth. Lopez had the inning's only hit, which was a two-run single, while the rest of the runs came on walks, wild pitches, and hit-by-pitches.
Â
The two teams combined to use 17 pitchers, with the win going to Portland reliever Cameron Richman (1-1). He worked 3.0 innings on Tuesday before giving way to Knutson. SU reliever Alex Jemal (0-4) was responsible for all four Portland runs in the seventh inning.
