PORTLAND, Ore. --- On a breezy Saturday night at Joe Etzel Field, the Santa Broncos hit three home runs to claim an 8-3 win over the Portland Pilots to even the three-game West Coast Conference series. Daniel Lopez homered for the Pilots.
Â
The Broncos (10-30, 3-14 WCC) scored the game's first four runs when they plated one in the top of the second and three more in the fifth inning. Jake MacNichols provided a solo homer in the second, and Connor Henriques belted a two-run blast in the fifth.
Â
Portland's (22-21, 4-16) first run came in the home half of the sixth inning. With two runners on, Chad Stevens just missed hitting a three-run homer when he sent a shot to deep center field that hit the very top of the fence and bounced back into play. Stevens ended up with a single, and Tracye Tammaro scored from second base.
Â
After a sacrifice bunt pushed Dutton Elske to third and Stevens to second base, Santa Clara reliever Ethan Heinrich avoided further damage with a pop-out and a strike out.
Â
An RBI single in the top of the seventh gave the Broncos a 5-1 edge, but the Pilots got the run back in the bottom of the frame. This time it was Elske who produced a run-scoring base hit to left field.
Â
Lopez then followed a two-run eighth for Santa Clara with solo homer in the bottom of the inning to make it a 7-3 game. But the Broncos added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, which was a lead-off home run off the bat of Andre Nnebe, and they would hold on for the win.
Â
Santa Clara starter Holden Bernhardt (1-5) notches his first win of the year after pitching 5.0 innings. He allowed just one run on four hits, he struck out three, and didn't issue a walk. Heinrich tossed 3.0 innings out of the pen, and Eric Lex worked the ninth.
Â
Eli Morse (2-7) takes the loss for the Pilots. He started and went 7.0 innings, surrendering five runs on eight hits, while fanning six. Relievers Nate Packard and Peter Allegro followed Morse on the hill.
Â
The Pilots won the series opener 5-3 on Friday night, setting up the rubber match on Sunday afternoon. First pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Joe Etzel Field.
