LYON, France – Former University of Portland soccer star Megan Rapinoe ('08) took home all of the top honors after leading the United States Women's National Team to the FIFA Women's World Cup France 2019™ championship on Sunday.
Rapinoe, who provided the game-winner with a penalty kick in the USA's 2-0 victory against the Netherlands, was named the
Golden Ball recipient for the tournament's best player. She also took home the Golden Boot award as the top scorer of the World Cup.
Sporting purple hair throughout the tournament, the former Pilot racked up six goals and three assists. Rapinoe stepped up in clutch situations throughout the event, tallying a pair of PK goals in a 2-1 Round of 16 victory against Spain. She added two more goals as the U.S. knocked off host France in the quarterfinals, before sitting out the semifinals with a hamstring strain.
University of Portland was once again well-represented on the big stage as Rapinoe was one of three former Pilots that competed at the FIFA Women's World Cup France 2019™. Canada legend Christine Sinclair ('06) inched closer to becoming the all-time leading scorer in women's soccer history and played in her fifth straight World Cup, while Sophie Schmidt ('10) made her fourth World Cup appearance for the Canadian team.
