PORTLAND, Ore. --- The No. 20 Pilots compiled 21 shots on the night, including a pair of attempts that hit the cross bar, but in the end Portland and the Colgate Raiders played to a 0-0 draw in the season-opener for both teams Friday at Merlo Field. Portland goalkeeper Nico Campuzano collects his first career solo shutout and finished with three saves.
Â
The Pilots (0-0-1) had the game's first quality chances as both Yusuf Cueceoglu and Luke Hendel hit the cross bar with shots in the opening 15 minutes. Cueceoglu rattled the frame with a strike from about 20 yards out in the seventh minute, and Hendel did the same only moments later.
Â
Rey Ortiz then had a shot saved by the Colgate (0-0-1) keeper in the 15th minute as the Pilots continued to press the Raider defense.
Â
Campuzano was solid in the box during the opening half, repeatedly punching out balls sent in by Colgate. He also made a pair of stops as the two sides entered the locker room tied 0-0.
Â
Portland kept applying pressure after the break, and Gio Magana-Rivera sent a shot wide just 15 seconds into the second half. The Pilots controlled possession from there, and they had a golden opportunity in the 57th minute. A through ball to Hendel created a one-v-one opportunity, pulling Jacob Harris off his line. But with the keeper approaching quickly, Hendel dragged a shot wide.
Â
Eventually the Pilots and Raiders headed to overtime, where the Pilots controlled the run of play and peppered the Colgate frame with shots. On a free kick in the 95th minute from about 23 yards out, Ortiz tried to bend one inside the right post, but it was just wide.
Â
Hendel also sent an attempt wide with a well-struck shot in the 95th minute, and the Pilots were knocking on the door throughout the second OT. Portland had four shots during that final 10 minutes, including a header that was wide from Francesco Tiozzo, but the clock would soon hit 110 as the game ended scoreless.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, who visit Merlo Field on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
