PORTLAND, Ore. --- In a game that was largely dominated by the No. 20 Portland Pilots, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers scored on a set piece in the second half to escape Merlo Field with 1-0 win in a non-conference men's soccer game played on Sunday evening. The Pilots out-shot the Chanticleers, and they put several attempts on-target throughout the second half.
Â
"I like the potential of our team," Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt said. "We created some really good chances all weekend that unfortunately didn't bounce our way. We again controlled large stretches of the game today and the Costal Carolina keeper made some great saves similar to the Colgate keeper on Friday. However the game is about scoring goals and preventing chances and over the course of the season some of these challenging lessons learned will drive our group forward as one. We have a clear picture of the work that is needed to decide games. We look forward to getting back on Merlo FieldÂ
next Friday in front our fans and thank everyone who came out to support us this weekend."
With the score 0-0 early in the second half, the Pilots (0-1-1) had a handful of quality chances, which came from Kevin Ogudugu and Jacobo Reyes. Reyes set up Ogudugu with a through ball in the 48th minute, and Ogudugu hit a well-struck shot towards the right post from about six yards out. Coastal Carolina goalkeeper Alberto Ciroi was there for the save.
Â
Moments later it was Reyes who put one on-frame on the other side of the 18-yard box, and again Ciroi was there for the stop. The keeper then recorded his third save in four minutes when he denied a hit off the foot of Ogudugu.
Â
In the 56th minute it was Portland goalkeeper Nico Campuzano who provided the stellar save after the Chanticleers were awarded a penalty when the Pilots were called for a handball inside the box. Tryone Mondi took the free attempt, and Campuzano came through with a clutch stop, which at the time preserved the scoreless tie.
Â
Rey Ortiz nearly gave the home side the lead with a shot in the 65th minute, but as was the case all game long Ciroi was there for the save.
Â
It was then in the 76th minute when Coastal Carolina found the back of the net with the match's only goal. On a free kick from right of the 18, Archie Filliter sent in a ball that was flicked on by teammate Emile Rzepecki. Campuzano did get a touch on it before the ball went in, but CCU had a lead they would hold on to.
Â
The Pilots did have a few chances at the equalizer, including in the 87th minute when a Portland corner found Noah Beck. He sent a low shot through traffic from 10 yards out, but once again Ciroi made the save.
Â
The Coastal Carolina keeper finished with six saves, while Campuzano countered with two.
Â
The Pilots controlled possession for much of the first half, but neither side created many scoring chances. In the 18th minute, Reyes found Ogudugu with a nice ball, and Ogudugu hit a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. The attempt was just wide as the game remained scoreless.
Â
In the 35th minute, the Pilots earned a corner kick, and the ball eventually fell to the feet of Jake Arteaga near the top of the area. Arteaga then sent a strike towards the frame, but it was just left of the left post and the two teams entered the locker room at the half scoreless.
Â
The Pilots remain at home for two more games this week at Merlo Field. First they welcome George Washington to The Bluff on Friday for a 7 p.m. match. Then Sunday brings a 6 p.m. game with Davidson.
