PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland scored twice in the first half and added another goal after the break as the Pilots cruised to a 3-0 win over the George Washington Colonials in a non-conference men's soccer game played on Friday night at Merlo Field. The Portland defense was stifling against the Colonials as the home side claims their second shutout of the year.
Â
Portland's (1-1-1) first goal came in the 14th minute after the Pilots earned a free kick right of the 18. Rey Ortiz sent a ball towards the top of the six-yard box, and Luke Hendel was there to provide the finish to make it a 1-0 game. It's Hendel's first goal of the year.
Â
Ortiz wasn't done as he assisted on the Pilots' next goal as well. In the 20th minute, Ortiz found Jacobo Reyes, who squared it to Gio Magana-Rivera near the top of the area. Magana-Rivera gained possession, took a touch, and hit low shot that was just inside the left post and out of the reach of the George Washington (0-2-1) keeper, Justin Grady. It was also Magana-Rivera's first goal this season, and Ortiz collected his second assist of the night.
Â
From there the Pilots continued to create chances, while limiting the Colonials' opportunities offensively.
Â
Then with less than six minutes remaining in regulation, Portland freshman Ben Ortiz provided some insurance as he found the back of the net with his first career goal. Yusuf Cueceoglu played a perfectly timed through ball to Ortiz, and the freshman did the rest by taking a touch around the keeper and tucking it away to make it a 3-0 game.
Â
The Pilots held the Colonials to just six shots overall, and Portland goalkeeper Nico Campuzano was solid once again between the pipes, finishing with four saves. Campuzano notches his second clean sheet in three matches.
Â
The Pilots next conclude their four-game homestand on Sunday when they host the Davidson Wildcats at 6 p.m. at Merlo Field.
