PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots scored three goals in the first half and collected three more after the break to cruise to a 6-0 shutout over the Davidson Wildcats in a men's soccer non-conference game played on Sunday night at Merlo Field. Six different Pilots scored against the Wildcats, and Caua Soares, Alejandro Pereira, and Jacobo Reyes each had a goal and an assist during win.
Â
The Pilots (2-1-1) opened the scoring early after they were awarded a penalty in the third minute. Luke Hendel, who was fouled initially to earn the PK, stepped to the spot and tucked it away to make it a 1-0 game. The goal is Hendel's second of the year.
Â
Gio Magana-Rivera then gave the Pilots a two-goal cushion when he buried one from about 20 yards out. In the 13th minute, Reyes found Magana-Rivera just outside the box, and the senior midfielder hammered a shot that snuck under the crossbar for his second goal of the weekend.
Â
It was 3-0 by the half after Pereira provided his first goal of the season. Ben Ortiz set up the goal with a perfectly placed through ball to Pereira near the penalty spot, and Pereira quickly took a touch and hit a shot past the keeper. Ortiz, a freshman, claims his first career assist as the Pilots took their three-goal lead into the break.
Â
Reyes scored Portland's fourth goal when he found himself un-marked inside the area after receiving a pass from R.J. Stretch. With only the keeper to beat, Reyes hit one inside the right post, and it's also his first career goal.
Â
It was 5-0 moments later when Brian O'Hara produced a goal, his first as a Pilot. On a free kick, Pereira sent in a cross and Soares attempted the initial shot. It took a deflection, fell to the feet of O'Hara, and was planted into the back of the net.
Â
Ortiz then recorded his second assist of the night by finding Soares inside the area, and Soares' shot beat the keeper for the night's final goal.
Â
Portland goalkeeper Josh Lagudah made his first start between the pipes and he made two saves to pick up the clean sheet. It's the second straight shutout for the Pilots and their third this year. Portland limited Davidson (1-2-0) to just six shots.
Â
The six goals are the most by the Pilots since 2002 when they also won by a 6-0 margin over DePaul.
Â
The Pilots next embark on their first road trip of the season, first traveling to Seattle, Wash., to face the Seattle Redhawks on Thursday night. Kickoff at Championship Field is set for 7 p.m.
