SEATTLE, Wash. --- The No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels scored twice in the first half and added two more goals after the break to defeat the Portland Pilots 4-0 on the day final day of the Husky Invitational on Sunday at Husky Soccer Stadium.
Â
The Pilots (1-1-1) were solid defensively to open the game, but the Tar Heels (4-0-0) caught a break in the 28th minute with the day's first goal. UNC sent a ball into the six-yard box, and it took a few deflections before ending up in the back of the net. Brianna Pinto was credited with the goal, which was the first conceded by the Pilots this season.
Â
10 minutes later the Tar Heels capitalized on a corner kick. Lois Joel sent the ball in, and Alexis Strickland elevated and finished with a header, giving North Carolina the two-goal advantage.
Â
Portland freshman keeper Jenny Wahlen made a nice save to begin the second half, but moments later a loose ball fell to the feet of North Carolina's Rachel Jones near the penalty spot. Jones gained control and slotted on inside the left post for the Tar Heels third goal of the afternoon.
Â
Isabel Cox scored UNC's final goal in the 87th minute.
Â
The Pilots did create some chances early, earning a corner kick in the 11th minute, and Jamie Rita hit a shot high in the 68th minute. Gabi Brummett put a shot on frame late in the match, but the North Carolina keeper was there for the save.
Â
Wahlen, who has already earned two shutouts to begin her collegiate career, finished with four saves.
Â
The Pilots next return home to host the Nike Portland Invitational at Merlo Field. The invite opens with Washington playing Denver Thursday evening, and the Pilots then play the Pioneers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
