SAN JOSE, Calif. --- Portland's Ellie Walker scored the equalizer with only four minutes remaining in regulation and Taryn Ries provided the game-winner in the 93rd minute as the Pilots claimed an emphatic, 2-1 comeback win over the San Jose State Spartans on Friday night at the Spartan Soccer Complex. Natalie Muth assisted on Ries' winner.
Â
Down 1-0 for most of the night after an early goal by the Spartans, the Pilots (3-2-2) finally pulled level with Walker's first goal of the year. In the 86th minute, the Pilots earned a free kick from just left of the area after San Jose State was called for a foul. Walker then sent a brilliant ball towards the top right corner of the frame that eluded the keeper and made it a 1-1 game, sending it to overtime.
Â
Then three minutes into extra time, Muth hit a perfectly weighted, 40-yard ball into the box from the right wing. The ball took a bounce before Ries ran onto it and deposited a header into the back net from about six yards out, giving the Pilots three points on the road. It's the second game-winner this season for Ries, and Muth collects her first assist.
Â
The Spartans (2-4-2) previously jumped out to the lead in the eighth minute when Jamilecxth Becerra tucked one away. Becerra's team-best fourth goal of the year gave the home side the 1-0 edge.
Â
Moments later Jamie Rita registered the Pilots' first shot of the night, and MJ Roe and Larkin Russell hit a pair of shots back-to-back in the 32nd and 33rd minutes, respectively. At the other end of the field, Portland's freshman keeper Jenny Wahlen was solid between the pipes, providing six first-half saves to keep the Pilots within a goal.
Â
The Pilots then recorded the first three shots of the second half, with Kimberly Hazlett, Gabi Brummett, and Russell each sending an attempt towards the goal. Russell had a strike saved 75th minute, and a shot off the foot of Muth was denied moments later.
Â
Wahlen finished with those six saves as the Pilots did well defensively to limit San Jose State's chances in the second half. Arian Romero, the Spartans' keeper, countered with three saves.
Â
The Pilots next make the short trek to Berkeley to play the No. 21 California Bears on Sunday afternoon. The match is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. and it will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network.
