BERKELEY, Calif. --- Portland's Jamie Rita and Rachel Khaw both found the back of the net, and goalkeeper Jenny Wahlen collected three clutch saves as the Pilots upset the 21st-ranked and previously unbeaten Cal Bears 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The win gives the Pilots a two-game sweep during their weekend road trip to the Bay Area.
Â
After a scoreless first half, the Pilots (4-2-2) were the more aggressive side coming out of the break, and it paid off with Rita's first goal of the season. Ellie Walker helped set up the play when she found Taryn Ries with a pass left of the 18. Ries then sent in a well-struck ball towards the top of the six-yard box, and that's where Rita re-directed it into the corner of the net with a header, giving the Pilots the 1-0 lead over their ranked opponent.
Â
From there Portland kept applying pressure in the final third, while staying solid defensively. Then in the 81st minute, Khaw provided some insurance. Walker played a quality ball over the top, and the Cal defender tried to pass it back to their keeper. But Khaw got to it first and hit the right post with her initial shot. The senior then calmly put away the rebound, and the Pilots had the huge road win.
Â
The Bears (8-1-0) spent the final 10 minutes of the match trying to get on the board, but Wahlen and the Portland defense refused to falter. Wahlen came through with a pair of big-time saves during the closing minutes as the Pilots were able to secure the shutout.
Â
It's the third clean sheet this year for Wahlen, a freshman in her first season with the Pilots. It's also the first game-winner for Rita.
Â
The first half was played fairly even, and Lucy Davidson opened the second half by hitting a shot wide from outside the box. Moments later Kimberly Hazlett had a shot saved after a nice ball was sent into the area.
Â
The Pilots have a bye next weekend and don't return to the pitch until Saturday, Oct. 5 when they open play in the West Coast Conference against the Pepperdine Waves in Malibu, Calif.
