PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots fell to the Portland State Vikings this afternoon, falling in four hard fought sets at the Chiles Center. The Pilots lost with set scores of 23-25, 22-25, 25-21, and 14-25.
Junior Liz Reich led the Pilots in kills with 17, while junior Kellie Hughes had 51 assists and six digs. Three different Pilots had 10-plus digs, including junior Carey Williams, who had 23.
Portland (8-3) went back and forth with PSU (4-7) to begin the match, until a kill from sophomore Claire Forrest and a service ace from freshman Grace Zilbert gave them the lead at 14-12. The Vikings responded with a 6-0 run, making it 14-18 Pilots. Portland wouldn't go without a fight, tying the score at 22-22 from a kill by Reich. The Vikings would hold on, and took the first set at 25-23 PSU.
The second set started with the Vikings taking the early lead, and holding on to it for the first half of the set. Down 10-14, the Pilots would go on a 5-0 run to reclaim the lead. Once again, the Vikings responded with a run of their own, and took the lead back at 22-17 thanks to a 5-0 run. Portland kept it close, making it 22-24 with one of senior Katie Barker's 14 kills, but ultimately fell to the Vikings, the second set score 25-22 PSU.
Refusing to quit, Portland came out to an 11-6 lead in the fourth set thanks to three kills and an ace from Barker. PSU kept it close, but were unable to rally as the Pilots would go on to take the third set at 25-21.
The fourth set began with a familiar feeling, as both teams went back and forth from the tip to make it 9-9. PSU would claim the match, going on a 16-2 run and finished the fourth set at 25-14 PSU.
The Pilots will return to the Chiles Center next week, facing San Diego and No. 12 BYU to begin WCC play.
