• Portland dropped its lone game last week at BYU, 96-70, Saturday night at the Marriott Center.
• The Pilots spotted the Cougars an early 22-point lead, but battled back to close the margin to seven midway through the second half. BYU responded with a 20-4 run to put the game away.
• Jacob Tryon led the Pilots with 12 points, six rebounds and a career-high eight assists, while Malcolm Porter scored a career-best 16 points in the loss. Theo Akwuba had his best game of the year with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
PORTLAND NOTES
• Portland's nine wins have already eclipsed last season's total of seven, while the 76-65 victory over San Francisco on Jan. 4 snapped a 23-game WCC regular season losing streak.
• The Pilots rank third in the WCC in FG percentage defense (.413) and and second in three-point defense (.309) while allowing just 68.3 points per game.
• Portland ranks 24th nationally in three-point percentage (.379).
• The team returns two starters, nine lettermen and adds five newcomers along with a returning redshirt to the 2019-20 roster.
• Newcomers Isaiah White (grad transfer) and Chase Adams (freshman) have been impact contributors. White ranks 15th in the WCC in scoring (13.0) and was named the league's Player of the Week on Nov. 25, while Adams ranks fourth in the conference in steals (1.6) and seventh in assists (3.9).
• JoJo Walker entered the 2019-20 season as the Pilots' active leader in points, minutes played, steals, free throws made and three-pointers made after starting his first two years on The Bluff. He is second on the team in scoring (10.7).
• Due to injuries/absences, UP has used seven different starting lineups with Tahirou Diabate the lone Pilot to start all 18 games.
• Hugh Hogland entered the NCAA transfer portal last week and is no longer with the team.
• Lavar Harewood (South Carolina State) joins White as a grad transfer adding experience as Portland has no true seniors on the roster.
• The current roster features players 11 different states, countries or territories including four from California and one each from Alabama, Illinois, Mali, Maryland, New Zealand, Oregon, Puerto Rico, New York, Texas and Washington.
• The Pilots were picked to finish 10th in the WCC Preseason Head Coaches Poll.
