PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots' men's and women's track teams co-hosted the Portland Indoor One with George Fox University this weekend, and many runners from both teams got to open their indoor seasons running on the newly refurbished track upstairs in the Chiles Center.
On Saturday at George Fox, senior Maya Murphy-Cook collected a PR of 7.97 in the final of the women's 60m dash, a time which moves her into fifth-place in program history in the event.
Back at the Chiles Center on Sunday, Murphy-Cook also won the women's 200m dash and earned a new personal best of 25.87, which is now the third best time in UP history. Then in the women's 400m dash, Tara Fuiten garnered a new personal record of 59.70, to move into the eighth place all-time spot in the event.
Sophomore Grace Oswin collected her own individual win in the women's 800m, running the race in a time of 2:19.30. Newcomer McKenna Smith also claimed second-place overall in the women's 3000m run.
On the men's side, the Pilots claimed the top five spots in the men's 3000m race, with Thomas Salas winning it in 8:34.74. He was followed by teammates Chris Anderson (8:36.55), Matt Schumann (8:37.77), John Kavulich (8:38.08), and Cole Shugart (8:38.95).
"First off, we were thrilled to be hosting an indoor meet," said men's head coach Rob Conner. We have a great new surface in the Chiles Center and we found it to be very fast! We had nothing but compliments."
The men also collected the top four individual times in the mile, where Henry Chapman claimed first (4:13.82), Aiden Fitzgerald came in second (4:15.75), Peter Allegre in third (4:18.58), and Sam Lomax finishing fourth (4:21.74).
"I was very happy with our guys. They all did great! said Conner." "Special shout outs to guys who won heats today — Thomas Salas, Matt Schumann and Caden Deutscher all won their heats of the 3000. Then Henry Chapman and Aidan Fitzgerald went 1-2 in the first heat of the mile. Jake Knoblich finished strong and edged Kris Braunberger in the second heat. Very exciting."
The Pilots head north to Seattle next weekend for the UW Invitational beginning on Friday, January 31st and continuing on Saturday February 1st.
