PORTLAND, Ore – JoJo Walker and Malcolm Porter combined for 32 points as the Portland Pilots defeated the San Francisco Dons 76-65 Saturday night in West Coast Conference action at the Chiles Center.
The Pilots (9-8, 1-1 WCC) won despite missing leading scorer Isaiah White, who was a late scratch with the flu. Walker moved back into the starting lineup and was sensational, finishing with 19 points on just nine shot attempts, dishing out six assists and committing just one turnover.
It was a complete team effort as all nine Portland players that got in the game scored four or more points.
Defensively, the Pilots forced 19 turnovers and limited the Dons (11-6, 0-2) to 42 percent for the game.
The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for the Pilots (9-8, 1-1 WCC) and a 23-game WCC regular season losing streak dating back to Feb. 3, 2018. It also broke an 11-game losing streak in the series with San Francisco.
Portland led for a majority of the night in a game that featured four ties and 11 lead changes, but San Francisco took a late 56-55 lead on a Charles Minlend layup with 5:04 remaining. The Pilots would then use a 10-0 run to take control sparked by back-to-back three-pointers by Porter and Walker.
Walker followed with a pair of free throws and then Jacob Tryon finished at the rim on a nice pass from Walker to make it 65-56.
Minlend answered with a three and Jimbo Lull had a dunk to pull San Francisco within four, but Tryon again finished at the rim on a dish from Chase Adams, who then got a crucial steal at the other end.
Walker weaved through the defense and brought the crowd to its feet with an acrobatic layup. Adams picked up his fourth steal of the night on the next possession and essentially iced the game with two free throws for a 10-point lead with 1:20 remaining.
Portland shot 49 percent from the field as a team, made 7-of-13 three-pointers and 19-of-24 free throws. USF was just 9-for-28 from three-point range.
The Pilot bench came up big, outscoring the Dons 21-12.
Sophomore center Theo Akwuba provided a big presence off the bench and finished with a season-high three blocked shots on the defensive end and added six points.
Junior guard Quincy Ferebee continued his stellar play off the bench with six points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal, while grad transfer Lavar Harewood added five points, two rebounds and a steal in six effective minutes. Tryon made multiple impact plays late.
Portland will look to continue the momentum with a one-game road trip to BYU next Saturday at 6 p.m. (PST). The game will be aired live on BYUtv, while radio coverage begins at 5:30 p.m. on 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT).
