Head coach Terry Porter brought in a lot of new talent to the
2020-21 roster with nine newcomers coming to The Bluff. Division I transfers Ahmed Ali (Washington State) and Michael Henn (Cal Baptist) are expected to be immediate impact players. The team also added five junior college transfers and two incoming freshmen.
A total of six returners are back this season, including sophomore point guard Chase Adams (30 starts) and junior Takiula Fahrensohn (7.8 points per game).
PORTLAND WOMEN'S NOTES
The Portland women are coming off a remarkable 2019-20 season that concluded with a run to the program's first
WCC Tournament Title since 1994. The team finished the year 21-11 overall and 11-7 in the WCC to finish fourth in the league standings.
The Pilots were picked third in the
WCC Preseason Poll, as selected by the league's head coaches. Portland earned one first place vote and trailed only perennial favorites Gonzaga and BYU. Sophomore forward Alex Fowler and junior point guard Haylee Andrews were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team, marking the first time Portland has had two players recognized.
Fowler led the WCC in scoring (18.0) points per game mark, she was named the WCC's Newcomer of the Year, was voted to the All-WCC First Team, was tabbed the WCC Tournament MVP, and joined Andrews on the all-tournament team. Fowler also collected seven double-doubles and averaged 8.0 boards per contest. Nationally, she ranked fourth in field goals made (242) and was 21st in total points (577).
As a sophomore, Andrews averaged 16.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game, which ranked 17th nationally and was tops in the WCC. She nabbed 2019-20 All-WCC Second Team honors, and she was selected to the WCC All-Tournament team after hitting a handful of clutch shots during Portland's run to the title in Las Vegas.
In his first year as head coach, Michael Meek led the team to its first 20-win season and earned their first berth to the NCAA Tournament since 1997. The team was unable to continue its season as the NCAA Tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Portland returns most of their roster this year, only losing guard Kate Andersen to graduation. Four freshmen newcomers have been added to the roster along with Oregon transfer
Lucy Cochrane.
The Pilots are currently scheduled to play
five non-conference games.
