PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Haylee Andrews and Alex Fowler both scored 25 points, Kate Andersen just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, and the Pilots rolled past the Santa Clara Broncos 84-62 in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played on Thursday night at the Chiles Center. The Pilots led by as much as 30 points and they shot 52 percent for the game.
Â
It was all Portland (15-10, 8-6 WCC) early as the home team scored the night's first 10 points, which included three-pointers from Maddie Muhlheim and Andrews. Andersen added a deep three to allow the Pilots to push their lead to 17 points, and the score was 28-10 heading to the second quarter.
Â
The Pilots carried their momentum into the next frame, and when Andrews opened the period with a three-point play, the Pilots' lead had grown to 21 points. Andrews added another three-point play later in the frame, and Andersen converted a traditional three-point play of her own to help the Pilots stretch their advantage to 22 points.Â
Fowler connected on her first five shots from the field, she had 10 points during the first quarter. She collected 19 points by halftime, and the Pilots took a sizable 48-28 edge into the locker room at the break.
Â
The lead would only grow in the second half as Andrews continued to make lay-ins while getting fouled, and soon it was 54-29 in Portland's favor. The Pilots didn't let up, and a 10-0 run to begin the fourth extended the margin to 75-46. Andrews scored six of those 10 points as the Pilots put the game out of reach.Â
Fowler finished 10 of 13 from the field, and she scores 20 points or more for the eighth time this season. She entered the night as the top scorer in the WCC.
Andrews, who began the game as the No. 3 scorer in the league, hits the 20-point plateau for the sixth time this year. She missed just one shot against the Broncos, shooting 8-for-10.
Â
Andersen's efforts on the glass helped Portland win the battle of the boards, 39-36.
Â
Santa Clara (9-15, 3-10 WCC) was led by Merle Wiehl's 19 points off the bench.
Â
Next for the Pilots is a visit from the San Francisco Dons, who come to the Chiles Center on Saturday for a 2 p.m. WCC contest.
