PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland had four players score in double figures and the Pilots pulled away from San Francisco early before claiming a 69-49 win over the Dons in a West Coast Conference basketball game played in front of a crowd of 1,772 fans on Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center. Haylee Andrews led the Pilots with 16 points.
Â
The win improves Portland to 16-10 overall, and at 9-6 in the WCC the Pilots have their most conference wins since 2008-09.
Â
Against the Dons (9-17, 2-12 WCC), Portland led from start to finish, and they built a lead as large as 28 points. Alex Fowler added 14 points for the Pilots, with 12 coming in the first half, Kate Andersen chipped in with 11 points, and Lauren Walker had a solid game, contributing 11 points.
Â
It was Walker who hit a pair of mid-range jumpers to help the Pilots surge in front 8-3 in the first quarter. Moments later Andrews connected for a three-pointer from the top of the key, and the Pilots were ahead by 10.
Â
The Pilots held the Dons to just seven points in the first quarter, and when Maddie Muhlheim buried a three-pointer three minutes into the second period, Portland had extended their lead to 22-9. Andersen then drained a corner three, which was followed by a baseline jumper from Andrews and a lay-in by Fowler to help fuel a 16-2 run and make it a 22-point game.
Â
The Pilots were ahead 39-19 at the half, and Portland's edge would grow in the third quarter as they continued to knock down shots and play tough defense. Muhlheim drilled a corner three, Walker converted down low on a nice pass from Keeley Frawley, and Anderson collected a lay-in to give the Pilots a sizable 54-26 advantage with less than four minutes remaining in the frame.
Â
The Pilots cruised from there to secure the home win.
Â
Fowler just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, and the sophomore connected on seven of her 10 shots to help the Pilots shot 49.2 percent on the game. Andrews provided six of Portland's 17 assists, and the Pilots committed a season-low eight turnovers.
Â
Mikayla Williams led San Francisco with 23 points.
Â
The Pilots now head on their final road tip of the regular season, which takes them to Southern California for a pair of WCC games. First the Pilots will be in Malibu to play the Pepperdine Waves on Thursday night, with tip-off at Firestone Fieldhouse set for 7 p.m. The Pilots will enter Thursday sitting in fourth place in the WCC, while the Waves are one spot back in fifth.
Â
The Pilots then play at LMU in LA on Saturday.
