PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland pitcher Christian Peters and runners George Duggan and Tara Fuiten are the U.S. Bank Student-Athletes of the Month for February.
Peters, senior right-hander out of Centralia, Wash., went a perfect 3-0 during the month as the Pilots got off to one of their best starts ever. Peters pitched a total of 21.0 innings in three starts, he allowed just one earned run, he struck out 26, and walked only two. In his first start against Nevada, Peters K'd a career-best 12 in 7.0 scoreless innings en route to landing the WCC's Pitcher of the Week award. He followed that start with two more seven-inning outings, striking out seven during each win. Opponents hit just .183 against him, and he'd finish the month with a minuscule 0.43 ERA.
George Duggan, a newcomer to the men's track and field team, made his mark early in Portland history in the men's indoor 400 this month. Duggan first collected second-place all-time in the indoor mile run with his time of 4:00.81 at the Husky Classic. He then went on to break the all-time school record in the men's indoor mile the next weekend, running a 3.59.61 at the MPSF Championships in Seattle. Duggan broke the previous record, set by Logan Orndorff at 3:59.94 last year.
Sophomore Tara Fuiten from the women's track and field team managed to make all-time record lists in three different events in the month of February, eventually breaking the school record in the indoor 400m dash. She first claimed second all-time in the 400m dash with her time of 57.68 at the UW Last Chance Meet. Then a short time later she garnered seventh all-time in 60m dash (8.01) and eighth all-time in the 200m dash (26.08) in the Chiles Center during the Portland Indoor Three. Last weekend, Fuiten ended a stellar month individually by breaking the all-time record in the 400 at the MPSF Championships in Seattle.
