SEATTLE, Wash.---The Portland Pilots volleyball team took the first set against eighth-ranked Washington, but the Huskies prevailed 3-1 in a competitive exhibition match at Alaska Airlines Arena on Saturday afternoon. Washington took the match with set scores of 16-25, 26-24, 27-25, and 25-21.
Â
Portland freshman Mia Wesley led the Pilots in both kills and digs with 11 and 15, respectively, while sophomore Jayde Harris also tied for the team high 11 kills. Senior Kellie Hughes added 25 assists on the day.
Â
"I'm proud of how the team came out and battled this afternoon," said Portland head coach Megan Burton. "University of Washington is a solid team with a ton of physicality. I thought we took care of our side of the net and executed our game plan. We served tough and put pressure on their passers. It came down to a few plays and consistency but we had opportunities to win the match. We'll take a look at the film and see how we can get better next practice. It was fun to see our Pilots back on the court competing."
Â
The Pilots will host their second exhibition match on Friday, January 22nd before kicking off WCC conference play against the BYU Cougars the following week on January 26th.
