SEATTLE, Wash.---The 2021 MPSF Indoor Track and Field Championships have officially been cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the conference announced earlier this week. The University of Portland is a member of the MPSF in both men's and women's indoor track & field.
With the news of the MPSF cancellation, UP Athletics has announced it will not host or travel to any full team indoor track & field competitions for the 2021 season. The Department will, however, still evaluate individual competition opportunities for student athletes if conditions permit.
"We fully support this decision because the safety of our student-athletes is our top priority," University of Portland Vice President for Athletics Scott Leykam said. "We look forward to competing in indoor track & field next year, and we're excited for our programs to fully proceed with the cross country and outdoor track and field seasons this spring."
The official statement from MPSF:
"The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation has canceled what would have been its 29th-consecutive men's and women's indoor track and field championship, originally scheduled at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor Facility for the 19th-straight year, February 26-27, 2021. Given the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the MPSF in consultation with University of Washington and local state of Washington and King County health officials, have deemed this season's indoor track and field conference championship not viable. As always, the MPSF remains committed to the safety and well-being of its student-athletes, campus and conference staff, and all others who contribute to the annual event."
