PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland guard Ahmed Ali scored a career-high 32 points, but the San Diego Toreros came away with a 78-70 victory over the Pilots Saturday in West Coast Conference basketball action at the Chiles Center.
Ali was extremely efficient and finished the game 10-of-14 from the field, 6-for-7 from three-point range and 6-for-7 from the foul line. He added six rebounds in 38 minutes of action.
Latrell Jones finished with 14 points and four rebounds for the Pilots (6-9, 0-6 WCC).
Portland shot 47 percent from the field, but allowed the Toreros (2-6, 1-3) to shoot a blistering 56 percent overall. The Pilots also committed 16 turnovers and gave up 52 points in the paint.
The Toreros led 43-34 at halftime and pushed the margin to as much 17 points on a three-point play from Marion Humphrey midway through the second half. Ali caught fire and buried three consecutive triples to pull the Pilots back within single digits.
A pair of free throws by Eddie Davis cut the deficit to six points with 2:31 remaining and the Pilots had a few possessions to get closer but could not convert. Portland did not make a field goal in the final five minutes of regulation.
Josh Parrish led a balanced San Diego attack with 20 points and eight rebounds. Four other Toreros were in double figures as only nine players on the roster suited up.
The Pilots missed starting guard Isiah Dasher (ankle) for the second straight game.
Portland will have a quick turnaround before hosting the Loyola Marymount Lions on Monday at 2 p.m.
