PORTLAND, Ore. --- Alex Fowler led four Pilots to score in double digits with 16 points, Haylee Andrews registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists, and Portland pulled away from the Saint Mary's Gaels on Monday afternoon to win 81-58 in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played at the Chiles Center. McKelle Meek and Lauren Walker also scored in double figures, finishing with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
After the Gaels (2-7, 0-3) kept it close in the first quarter, the Pilots used a 12-2 run early in the second to take control of the game. Andrews connected on consecutive buckets during the outburst, and Tyler McCliment-Call capped the run with a nice turn-around jumper in the lane that gave the Pilots a 31-22 edge. Saint Mary's did close the gap shortly after that, but a quick 7-0 run to end the half made it a 40-30 game at the break.
The Pilots continued their surge in the third quarter as Meek drained a couple from beyond the arc. Fowler provided perhaps the highlight of the game when she dove to the floor to collect a loose ball, somehow found Andrews with a pass from the ground, and Andrews completed a fast break with an un-contested lay-up that helped give Portland a 62-44 edge going to the final frame.
Rose Pflug handed the Pilots their largest lead, to that point, when her short-range jumper in the paint made it a 20-point game with 5:30 left, and Meek again connected from deep with two more three's to help seal the win.
The Pilots improve to 6-3 and stay perfect in the WCC with a 3-0 league mark. It's Portland's first 3-0 start to the conference schedule since the 1996-97 season.
Fowler had 11 points in the first half as Portland built their lead. Seven of those came in the first quarter when both teams opened the game hot from the field, and it was the Gaels who led 20-19 after one.
Andrews reaches double digits in assists for the second time this year, and it's her seventh career double-double.
Meek was four-for-four from beyond the arc as all 12 of her points came on three-pointers. Walker was solid in the post for the Pilots, and she scores in double figures for the second time this year.
Portland shot a season-best 54 percent for the game, they connected on 10 three-pointers, and surprisingly only shot two free throws. They also combined for a season-high 28 assists on 35 field goals.
Finau Tonga was the top scorer for the Gaels, finishing with 16 points and 10 boards off the bench.
The Pilots next head to Spokane, Wash., for a showdown with the No. 21 Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday at the McCarthey Athletic Center. Tip-off for the two Northwest rivals is set for 2 p.m.
