MALIBU, Calif. – The Portland Pilots fell to the No. 6 Pepperdine Waves 3-0 in their WCC opener, dropping the Pilots to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Three different Waves players scored on the day, with Carlee Giammona, Trinity Watson and Tori Waldeck registering goals.
Things got off to a tough start for the Pilots very early in the match. Just 71 seconds in, Pepperdine made a run at the goal, with Joelle Anderson sending an inch-perfect ball into the box. Carlee Giammona took the ball and launched a shot past Bre Norris that gave the Waves a 1-0 lead not even two minutes in.
Following the goal, the Waves put together a rush of shots in the first 15 minutes with four total. The Pilots looked frazzled early, but as the half progressed, they managed to calm themselves down and fended off Pepperdine much better. Once Portland settled down, the match started to look more even.
Even though they were more even, Pepperdine still looked formidable. Freshman keeper Bre Norris was put to work in the first half, collecting three saves and dealing with eight shots from the Waves. The Pilots managed two shots of their own, most of them coming off the counterattack, but couldn't score on either chance. The score remained 1-0 after the first 45.
The second half started and the Pilots came out with authority to start, making an immediate run at the goal. But after that initial run, the Waves settled in and controlled possession early. They pressed the Pilots' backline and made it hard for Portland to make any more sustained runs at the goal.
A tough break for the Pilots set the Waves up for a second goal. In the 68
th minute, Norris and Tori Waldeck chased a loose ball and Norris accidentally pushed Waldeck in the back, leading to a foul in the box. That meant a penalty kick for Pepperdine, a kick that Trinity Watson would take. Watson stepped up to the ball and launched a shot to the right of the box that found the back of the net. The Waves led 2-0.
Waldeck was involved again in the action in the 72
nd minute. Giammona played a great through ball to Waldeck, who subsequently started her attack. Waldeck launched a shot from well outside the box that curled just above Norris's head and found the goal. It was a true golazo that gave the Waves a 3-0 lead.
Portland did their best to search for some sort of offense, but the Waves wouldn't relent. The Pilots fell 3-0.
Next up, the Pilots will be back home in Portland for their conference home opener against the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats, video and ticket options.
