PORTLAND, Ore. – The Gonzaga Bulldogs scored two goals in the waning moments of the match to steal a game from the Portland Pilots 3-2. The loss drops the Pilots to 4-6-0 on the year and 0-2-0 in conference play.
Jordan Thompson, Erin Healy and Maddie Kemp were the goalscorers for the Zags. Meanwhile, Taryn Ries and Nedya Sawan scored the two goals for the Pilots. Ries's goal was the third of her season while Sawan's goal was her fifth.
It was a physical start for the first 15 minutes, with both teams defending aggressively. Both teams utilized an aggressive high press in hopes of forcing early turnovers near the goal. The pressure from both sides made offense a rarity in the early goings.
The offense finally came in the 23
rd minute. Nedya Sawan collected a long ball and initiated the attack for Portland. She pushed a pass through the backline to an onrushing Taryn Ries. The senior forward broke past the backline and launched a left-footed that hit the post perfectly. The ball rolled into the back of the net, making it 1-0 Pilots.
But the lead didn't last long for Portland. Seven minutes later, Lauren Elwer drew a foul in the box for Gonzaga that gave them a penalty opportunity. Jordan Thompson stepped up to the ball to take the penalty and put it past Portland keeper Bre Norris to tie things up at one.
After the penalty, the momentum shifted in Gonzaga's favor. The Zags pushed forward and got off three more shots before the half closed. Portland searched for a go-ahead goal off the counter, but would not find it, keeping the score tied at one after the first 45.
The second half started and play evened out again. Both teams opted to counter, playing quick to try and catch the other team sleeping. Gonzaga, however, seemed to contorl possession slightly.Still, the fast pace combined with the physical play made for an exciting, aggressive start.
After an even start, the Pilots finally gained an advantage. Emily Collier slowly brought the ball up from the midfield in the 62
nd minute. She then worked the ball to Sawan on the left side of the box. Sawan went to work, dribbling by her defender before launching a powerful shot towards the goal. The ball found the back of the net, giving Portland a 2-1 lead.
Portland looked to be in a good spot to finish the match off and come away with their first win. But then disaster struck for the Pilots. In the 86
th minute, Lauren Elwer worked the ball down the right side of the field and sent a perfect cross to Healy. The forward headed it just out of Norris's reach, making it 2-2.
But the scoring didn't stop there for Gonzaga. Healy took control of the ball at the top of the box in the 87
th minute. Healy played a quick pass to Kemp, who took a split second to control the ball before taking a strong shot at the goal. The ball found its way past Norris and gave the Zags the lead. It was a lead they would hold, winning the match 3-2.
