PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of Portland has signed a three-year agreement with KOIN-TV and KRCW-TV to make the local CBS and CW affiliates the exclusive television broadcast partner of Pilots home sporting events in the Portland-metro market. Saturday's women's soccer match against defending NCAA Champion Santa Clara will launch a 20-event broadcast schedule for the 2021-22 athletics season.
Portland Sports Network, UP's in-house video department, will handle all production elements for the broadcasts.
"We are thrilled work with such an engaging television partner in the local market," said Scott Leykam, Portland's Vice President for Athletics. "KOIN/KRCW recognizes the value of local sports to the community and we are proud to showcase our student-athletes and programs to a wider audience."
"The University of Portland has a long history of athletic success and developing young student-athletes. We're excited to be able to highlight the next generation of women and men on KOIN TV (CBS) and KRCW (Portland's CW) to our local viewers," said Tom Keeler, Vice President, General Manager KOIN/KRCW. "We are very fortunate to partner with such a distinguished university and highlight its ongoing contributions to our community. UP is a Portland gem and we are eager to tell their many positive stories."
Saturday's women's soccer showdown will be the first University of Portland event televised in primetime on KOIN-TV, the local CBS affiliate. It is a match-up of two of the most successful and storied soccer programs in the nation. The Pilots have won two NCAA Championships, including a 2-1 overtime victory against Santa Clara in 2002 with Portland soccer star Christine Sinclair scoring both goals as a true freshman.
Portland also went undefeated in a 2005 NCAA title run with a roster that featured Sinclair as well as US Women's National Team standouts Megan Rapinoe, Stephanie Cox and Angie Woznuk. The program has reached the NCAA College Cup (Final Four) eight times.
Santa Clara, meanwhile, joins Portland as two of just seven programs to win multiple women's soccer national championships after racing to the 2020 title last Spring. The Broncos also claimed the 2001 title.
Pacific Northwest broadcasting legend Ann Schatz will serve as the primary play-by-play voice of the Pilots for all basketball games and soccer matches, while Bryan Sleik will be on the call for volleyball matches and baseball games. Other members of the broadcast team will include soccer analyst Angela Harrison, basketball analyst Jennifer Mountain and Korey Kier in the booth for baseball.
"Our in-house video department continues to be a valuable resource for the University and sets the standard for collegiate-produced sports content," Leykam added. "We envision that the quality of our event production and the high-level of competition will provide quality programming for local sports fans."
"Local soccer fans now have the opportunity to watch one of the premier collegiate women's soccer programs in the country on live, over-the-air local television," Keeler added.
Portland has already aired two soccer matches and one volleyball match over the last month on KRCW-TV. See below for the full projected broadcast schedule, which is subject to change.
