SAN MATEO, Calif. – Nedya Sawan highlights the All-WCC selections for the Portland Pilots after making the first team, with three other Pilots – Ellie Walker, Taryn Ries and Bre Norris – also earning honors.
Sawan made the team after being the Pilots' leading scorer for the Pilots, notching 26 points off 12 goals and two assists. Her 12 goals were good for third in the WCC and marked just the third time since 2012 that a Pilot eclipsed 10 goals in a season. Her six game-winning goals were the most of any player in the WCC. It is the first time that Sawan has earned All-WCC recognition.
Walker made the All-WCC Second Team after anchoring a Pilot defense that earned eight shutouts over 17 games, the most for Portland since 2018. She was one of only three Pilots to play and start in every match this season. She had two assists on the year, which is tied for second on the team. This is the first time that Walker has earned All-WCC honors.
Ries garnered All-WCC recognition for the fourth time in her career, earning All-WCC Honorable Mention. Ries had five goals and one assist on the year, putting her firmly insecond in points this season for the Pilots with 11. Ries had made the All-WCC First Team the previous five seasons. She becomes just the 10
th Pilot in school history to earn All-WCC recognition four times.
Norris rounds up the All-WCC selections for the Pilots, making the Freshman Team. Norris was stellar in her first year on The Bluff, with 64 saves, a .771 save percentage and eight shutouts in 1,530 minutes played in goal. All those tallies are the most by a freshman goalkeeper since Cori Alexander in 2003. Alexander also had 64 saves that year, but played over 500 minutes more than Norris.
The Pilots put together a quality 2021 season, finishing with a 9-8 record overall and a 5-4 record in conference play. That mark was the best record for the Pilots in WCC play since 2013.
