STANFORD, Calif. – The defending NCAA champion and No. 7-ranked Stanford Cardinal defeated the Portland Pilots by a 77-55 margin in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday night at Maples Pavilion. Haley Jones recorded a triple-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for Stanford, while Alex Fowler led three Pilots in double figures with 13 points.
Maisie Burnham added 12 points off the bench for Portland, while Haylee Andrews finished with 11 points and four assists. Lucy Cochrane, the reigning WCC Player of the Week, filled the stat sheet with eight points, six rebounds, four assists, four blocked shots and two steals.
Turnovers and second chance points proved to be the difference for Stanford (2-1). Portland committed 32 turnovers on the night and the Cardinal gained a 30-14 edge in points off of turnovers and 22-2 margin in second chance points.
Both teams finished the game at 49 percent shooting from the field, but Stanford attempted 20 more field goals than the Pilots (2-1).
Stanford jumped out to a double-digit lead early, but the Pilots closed the first quarter with a 7-0 run capped by a Maddie Muhlheim three-pointer to make it 20-11 after the first 10 minutes.
The Cardinal then used a 12-0 run to open the second quarter to create separation. Portland committed 18 first half turnovers which led to 18 Cardinal points. Both teams shot 53 percent from the field in the half, but Stanford attempted 34 shots to Portland's 19 and took a 43-24 lead into intermission.
Portland began clicking offensively early in the third quarter as Fowler led the way with nine points in the period. A layup by Burnham brought the Pilots within ten at 56-46 with 2:10 left, but the Cardinal scored the final five points of the quarter of would maintain a double digit lead the rest of the way.
Portland will continue its road trip with a pair of games at the Bank of Hawaii Classic this weekend in Honolulu. The Pilots will take on Hawaii on Friday at 9 p.m. (PT) and then play Prairie View A&M on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. (PT).
