SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Montana State Bobcats pulled out a 69-66 victory over Portland Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Incarnate Word Tournament hosted at the McDermott Center. The game was close throughout and the Pilots had a three-pointer rim out at the buzzer that would have forced overtime. The loss snapped a five game Portland winning streak.
Moses Wood led the Pilots with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Tyler Robertson added 16 points, while Chris Austin and Mike Meadows added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The game came down to the final possession as the team's traded leads late in regulation. Abdul Mohamed made two free throws with 17 seconds left to give the Bobcats a four-point lead, but Pilot freshman Chika Nduka came up with two clutch free throws seconds later. Mohamed then made 1-of-2 from the line and the Pilots called timeout with 4.5 seconds left.
Out of the timeout Portland got Kristian Sjolund a good look at a left wing three-pointer, but it went off the back rim and Montana State held on for the victory.
MSU led 47-42 in the second half when Portland put together three straight productive possessions to take the lead. Chris Austin got a blocked shot that led to a three-pointer from Wood. On the next play Sjolund had another weakside blocked shot and Robertson capitalized with a transition three to give Portland its first lead of the second half at 48-47. Robertson then added a three-point play for a 50-47 lead.
The Bobcats answered with a 7-0 run and built a 59-52 lead with six minutes remaining, but Portland responded once again. Austin buried a three followed by a Wood layup and another three-point play from Robertson for a 62-61 edge.
Jubrile Belo converted a dunk and Mohamed hit a three-pointer before Meadows converted a tough runner to set up the final few possessions.
Wood had it going early and finished with 13 first half points as the Pilots trailed 34-33 at the half.
Mohamed scored a game-high 25 points, while Belo added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
